Parakeet Bath is important and hygiene is important for all living beings alike. And out of all types of hygiene, personal one ranks at the top. Humans, animals, or birds all need to maintain cleanliness to keep diseases at bay. Just as we take a bath, we bath our dogs and cats. And this should be the case with the next common pet: budgies.
Why does my Budgie need a bath?
Budgies need a bath as much as we all do. And the basic reason is to maintain hygiene. By bathing regularly, the risk of parasites or mites attacking them reduces to the minimum. The absence of parasites ensures the absence of related diseases. Apart from the basic need, they also need a bath for:
Grooming
Bathing plays an important part in a budgie’s grooming. These little creatures love to groom themselves and their partners in the form of preening. Bathing is another way to let them enjoy the grooming aspect. Additionally, the majority of Budgie parents have revealed that their pet birds love water. You can enrich their lives by offering them some interesting ways of bathing.
Prevents itching
Bathing plays an important role in removing the dust and dirt from the plumage. The accumulated debris can cause dryness and lead to itching over time. With a regular bath, budgie’s boy not only stays dust and germ-free but also moisturized. This prevents itching.
Reduce discomfort
Bathing reduces the budgie’s discomfort during his molting period. When budgie’s old feathers shed and the new pin feathers are emerging, the little bird feels a lot of discomfort and itching. The sharp ends of the growing feathers cause uneasiness to the bird that lessens with a regular bath.
How often should I offer a bath to my Budgie?
The frequency of offering a bath to your Budgie depends on your indoor environment. If your home environment is on the dry side, you should consider offering him a bath multiple times per week. If, however, your indoor environment is on the moist side, you can follow a weekly bathing routine for your Budgie.
How to make your Parakeet take a bath?
There are several methods adopted by Budgie’s parents for Parakeet bath sessions. From basic to some unique and interesting ones have been discussed here:
Misting
This is the most common method for Budgies who do not like to take a bath. If you are making your little Budgie familiar with water for the very first time, you must use this method of Parakeet bathing. Fill up a misting spray bottle with lukewarm water and mist it all over your pet bird’s body. Wipe him gently with a clean towel.
Water Bowl
You can offer a bowl full of water to your Budgie and encourage him to hop in. Consider adding some greens or attractive flowers in the bathing bowl for the much-needed encouragement.
Shower perches
Accompanying your budgie to a bath is the best way of spending time with him. A shower perch can be fixed near your bathing shower where only a small amount of water reaches. Your Budgie will enjoy little droplets from your shower as he watches you do the same.
A shallow plate full of greens
This method requires you to fill up a shallow plate with some properly washed greens like kale and lettuce. Pour some water over the greens and offer it to your little birdie. You might have to encourage your pet with a treat like millets placed in the bowl. This makes them feel closer to their natural environment.
Sink full of water
In this method, Budgie owners fill up the sink with enough water to keep the bird half inside the water. The bird is then encouraged to hop into the sink and soak it up. This is one of the most common methods of offering Budgies a bath.
Hanging greens
This is the most interesting method used by Budgie’s parents for the Parakeet bath. Wet greens are hung inside Budgie’s cage to allow them to experience the most natural form of bathing followed by the wild Budgies. You will have to secure the hanging greens properly as your Budgie might start playing with it with full force.
Tupperware with a mirror
A mirror can be placed at the bottom of the Tupperware and filled with water. Offering this bowl to your Budgie will make him comfortable to jump in. He feels like enjoying a bathing session with a companion and gets extremely comfortable with the water.
Cupped hands
This is the simplest method to get your Budgie to take a bath. Cup one of your hands under a slow running sink tap and encourage your Budgie to fly over it with your second hand. While keeping your cupped hand still, you can play in the water with the other.
Cat flower fountain
What better encouragement you can provide your Budgie for a bath than a water fountain. Catit flower fountain is usually offered to pet cats but works extremely well for the Budgies too. An interesting little fountain pushing filtered water is offered to Budgies to motivate them to jump in. They might only drink water from it sitting at the corner or jump into it to enjoy a relaxing bath.
Final Thoughts on Parakeet bath
Bathing is an essential aspect of taking care of your Budgie. If your pet bird loves water, you won’t find issues in adopting any of these bathing methods to him. If, however, he is afraid of water, you might have to start a little slow with just an introduction to water with misting, taking it forward with a shallow plate filled with greens, and later adding other methods to his bathing routine.
Whatever method you are trying with your Budgie, remember that consistency is the key. It takes time to develop certain habits, so ensure to stick with a single method until your pet becomes comfortable with it. Interesting bathing options can be added at a later stage to add fun to your Budgie’s life.
