Natural Pain Killer for Birds and Budgies? Meloxicam is usually used for pain relief in birds. But also herbs as natural medicine
If your pet is sick, you do not feel the happiest. Budgies are very small birds and any minor injury or illness can greatly affect their condition. Especially when your bird in that sick state feels tremendous pain and because of that condition is unable to do basic life activities. There are chemically synthesized pain killers that can reduce and alleviate pain in injured and sick birds, but there are also alternative natural methods and natural pain killers that reduce pain while not negatively affecting your bird’s organs. So if you are not a fan of artificially synthesized drugs, start using some natural painkillers. Usually, stronger drugs have a positive effect on one segment of the treatment, but negatively affect another segment.
Most herbs are natural painkillers. Aloe vera is a plant that has natural anti-inflammatory properties and which enables fast action against inflammation in the avian organism. Aloe gel is applied to the wound if it is an external injury or taken orally if there is any internal pain. Then the alpha plant also possesses substances that participate in the process of reducing pain, especially arthritis. Another excellent treatment for arthritis is dandelion and it also can help relieve muscle and joint pain, because they are also anti-inflammatory.
The root of the valerian plant is also involved in reducing pain and inflammation. Usually, the second name of this natural remedy is a sedative because it calms the nerves, but also reduces the pain caused by nerve damage. It can also reduce stress and anxiety in birds.
Cayenne pepper has a really important substance called capsaicin that has really powerful pain-relieving properties especially when you apply it to the skin. The basic property is that it reduces the amount of substance P that is otherwise involved in the process of transmitting pain information to the brain. When capsaicin reduces the level of substance P, then the messages about the execution of pain do not reach the bird’s brain and the bird, thanks to this substance, no longer feels pain.
Eucalyptus, which has great healing and anti-inflammatory properties, can also be used to reduce pain in budgies, but only as a plant, not as an essential oil. Budgies should not use essential oils.
You can use all of these natural remedies to reduce pain, however, you should first consult a veterinarian to determine what degree of pain your budgie is struggling with.
In order to know that your bird is in pain, you also need to know the visible symptoms of that pain. There is acute and chronic pain. It is very important to know the difference between acute and chronic pain. Acute pain is shorter in time and does not last as long as chronic pain, and it is caused by some temporary injuries and accidents. Chronic pain is constant and stronger and can have a long-term effect on your bird’s health.
Your birds may also feel pain in areas of the body where the injury occurred a long time ago, so any change in the weather can affect their condition. Bone and joint pain also occur as a result of aging.
If you notice that your bird spends too much time on one leg, or avoids flying, spreading its wings, or performing activities that it normally does, then your bird certainly has an injury that causes pain and prevents it from moving and flying normally.
The cause of your bird’s injury can also be its company, the budgies with whom it shares a cage. If you notice feathers on the cage or that the bird has a closed eye, maybe your bird’s friends should not be in the cage with them because of disagreements, so it is better to separate them into separate cages.
Budgies are otherwise very cheerful and playful, active birds when they are healthy. So if you notice constant fatigue, not moving, constant sleep, and reduced activity, your bird may be coping with pain that prevents it from functioning normally.
If they avoid getting out of the cage and moving from the place, be sure to visit a veterinarian, who will tell you in more detail about the condition of your bird.
Birds are usually very calm and non-aggressive animals, however, pain can be the cause of increased aggression and intolerance in birds. Irritability is normally normal when hormonal changes occur in your birds, but a constant showing of this condition should not happen. Especially since they can become aggressive towards other birds or towards you when you want to take them, wishing they might hurt you, they will hurt themselves too, unfortunately.
Lack of appetite can also be caused by the pain your bird feels, preventing it from eating normally and taking energy from food. So if you notice that the food bowl is constantly full and intact for days, then you need to ask yourself what is wrong with your budgie. Not taking food can only further harm her, reduce her energy values for activities and prevent her from being healthier.
But as we mentioned, a constant feeling of pain will replace the need for food, water, and everything the bird loves, because budgies will only focus on how to endure the pain that is constant and very uncomfortable.
Budgies are quite sensitive birds and every small change can affect them, every small injury can greatly affect their health. Usually, your birds will not look sick or show obvious symptoms until their disease is in its final stage, which can be lethal.
Birds have a very good and high metabolism so they will not immediately show symptoms of the disease. And it is very difficult to understand right at the beginning that they are in pain and not healthy. The smaller the bird, the bigger the problem is.
Giving medicine to birds can go in the wrong direction, as it can in humans if you do not consult a doctor or veterinarian. In any case, the veterinarian would certainly instruct you to put the medicine in the birds’ food or water or to give it with the help of a water dropper or a syringe without a needle.
Meloxicam is usually used for pain relief in birds. It is a non-steroidal drug that otherwise plays a very important role in reducing pain and reducing anti-inflammatory processes. This medicine should never be used in birds that have kidney problems.
Butorphanol is a painkiller that is usually used for fractures or pain that is not chronic but current or acute because it acts like an opioid.
Tramadol is also an opioid that is somewhat more durable than butorphanol and is of course used to treat acute diseases but by no means chronic ones.
You can give the above-mentioned medicines for calming and relieving pain, but of course only in consultation with your veterinarian. The veterinarian can only correctly diagnose and give a period of use of the drug. The veterinarian needs to check which medicine your bird can use because as much as pain medications can be helpful, they can be harmful to some organs such as the kidneys.
A better alternative than using synthetic chemicals is of course using natural painkillers, such as aloe vera, alfalfa, eucalyptus, and the like. Everything natural is better for the bird’s health because it has not been artificially processed and there are no additional impurities that can be harmful to your bird. In any case, if there is a wound that causes pain, aloe vera gel can be used, or this plant can be taken orally. In any case, plants that possess anti-inflammatory properties will be consumed by your plant rather than a medicine prescribed by a veterinarian because it does not have the natural taste that budgies are accustomed to.
In the end, we can conclude that you will help each of your birds more if you notice symptoms that cause pain before.
Definitely NEVER take painkillers on your own in the doses you want, as this can be very dangerous for your bird, in addition to the wrong dosage of medication and overdosing can kill your bird, which of course is not your goal.
That is why a visit to the vet is MANDATORY, with an examination and consultation it is the only proper and reliable way to treat your bird. When the budgie is sick and in pain, pay attention to him, be close to him, and try to transfer at least part of your positive energy to him. Try to feed him and give him water, because usually if they feel the pain they will not eat or drink water, not because they refuse it, but because their primary feeling of pain is that they want to get rid of it as soon as possible.
So show your birds love, because love is, after all, what heals us and lifts us out of the worst situations. So it is with birds.

My budgie keep vomiting every time it eats. What to do to stop him from vomiting?
Do you supply charcoal, sea shells and the powdered clay provided by most pet stores. I learned recently they should always have what I call the trilogy charcoal and clay help fight toxins and other stuff as well as sea shells aid in digestion. I maybe a little late replying but birds typically are given just seeds as many people seem to forget the importance of veggie chop or just providing fruit and veg as well as seed and pellets i.e. birdy food pyramid. My birds personally took to the chop quickly but still are intimidated by whole foods or cut up. But the typical all seed diet is very hard for a bird to digest and can lead to crop issues without the shells for example to help grind the seeds up as birds don't chew.
It is also possible your bird is regurgitating food and not vomiting its typically a bonding thing among birds but if a bird is solo meaning no bird friend it can see its reflection as a bird and try to feed it leading to some issues from frustrations or stress from lack of reciprocation lol ya bird can be funny sometimes.
I hope this helps
