How can you show Budgie that you love him?

When you love someone, you never want them to doubt your feelings. That’s why people do nice things for the people they love and even keep reiterating their feelings. Interestingly, things are quite similar when it comes to budgies. Not only are they affectionate but they also enjoy receiving love from their owners.

So if you ignore your budgie and act standoffish around them, they can easily get lonely and depressed. But how can you make these sweet birds feel loved? Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to talk about today. Here are a few tips to help you out:

Hand feed them and give them treats

Hand-feeding your budgie and giving them treats is a great way to form an affectionate bond with them. It makes them feel loved and cared for. As long as what you’re giving them is healthy, this is an effective strategy. And if you want to ramp things up, you can even share a meal with them. This is one of the ways that birds in the parrot family bond in the wild and can make your budgie feel like you are part of his flock.

Talk softly and spend time with them

Much like humans, budgies like being talked to softly. Similarly, they like it when you spend time with them. So if you want your budgie to feel loved, dedicate hours out of each day to just hang out and talk to them. You could even try to play some music and sing softly to them. If you notice that your budgie likes music, you can try dancing with them as well.

Just put on a song with a good beat and get down with your bird. It may sound silly but all you have to do is Google “budgies dancing” and see all search results to understand how much budgies love dancing. After all, these birds usually communicate through body language and sound – both things that dancing engage.

Play with them and give them toys

Another way to show your budgie that you love them is by playing with them – this helps you create a tight bond with them. You can even introduce their favorite toys to ensure they have a blast. If you really want to go all-in though, create a habitat with all their toys.

Let them make the first move

If you just got a new budgie or the one you’ve had for a while is still skittish, don’t approach them right off the bat. You have better chances of gaining their trust if you just sit somewhere near them so that they can approach you when they need to. This makes them feel loved and less anxious, creating a bond between the two of you.

Continuously being available like this makes your budgie more and more comfortable around you.

Hold and pet them

What can we say? Physical touch is one of budgies’ love languages. They particularly like it when you hold and pet them. But you’ll have to work up to it, especially if your budgie is new – it will take time until they are comfortable with you petting them.

Once they’re ready though, you’ll notice that they like being petted on their neck and back of the head. Other places that budgies can be petted include at their throat, along their chest, and sometimes below the wings. The last one is only for trusting budgies though. And even then, they like it when you’re doing it as the rest so that they can watch you.

Most of them enjoy petting at the throat though – it reminds them of how they groom each other in the wild. There are some parts of your budgie’s body that you should starve off though. These include the top of their head, their feet, their back, and under their lifted wings. They are protective of these areas and will usually only let you touch them after training.

The good thing about budgies is that they’ll find a way to let you know that they don’t like where you’re petting them. They may retreat or push you away with their beak. On the other hand, if they like what you’re doing, they’ll lean into your touch.

Things you should avoid doing

In a bid to make your budgie feel loved, you can easily end up doing things that they actually hate. To save you from this fate, we have decided to round up a list of things you shouldn’t do:

Kiss your budgie

While some budgies like being kissed by their owners, many find it invasive. They have even been known to step back if you try to kiss them, particularly if you move quickly, wear a strong fragrance, or make a loud kissing sound. For many budgies, kissing is reserved for their cage mates or potential mates. So if you try to kiss your budgie and they resist, just let them be. Better still, don’t try to do it in the first place.

Blow on your budgie

Also known as chuffing, blowing on your budgie is usually considered a sign of affection. In fact, most budgies enjoy it. But there’s one problem with this practice – since it is used during mating, it can confuse your budgie, especially if they’re already too attached to you.

So if it’s mating season and you blow on your budgie’s ears, along their back, or at the top of their head, they may interpret it as a sign that you want to court them. This will lead to behavioral issues down the line. As such, blowing on your budgie should be avoided at all costs.

Be present

Ultimately, the best way to show your budgie love is to be present while you are with them. Enjoy every second you have together and pay attention to what they like. This way, you can easily figure out which treats, toys, activities, and petting methods they prefer. Once you know this, showing them love becomes easy.
