Budgie, also called Budgerigar is a cute and delectable bird. Owing to their playful and energetic nature, pet lovers have a wonderful time taming them. A budgie is not difficult to tame but it may take you a little longer.
Budgerigar is a desert-adapted bird. But over the years, they have been bred and raised across the globe in varying conditions. Their quality of being adjustable brings their open-to-learn nature. This has made their human flock train them for a happy and hygienic living.
Starting Budgie training with a baby Budgie is always a better option because the elderly birds are slightly harder to teach. It may still be a timely process but consistency and patience is the key.
Is it hard to tame a Budgie?
Taming a Budgie may seem hard but it is not. A budgie is an energetic and curious bird. He will spend time discovering his new cage, exploring the all-new surroundings, and learning about his many new toys.
Hardship to tame a Budgie can only be seen when your bird is trying to get comfortable with the process. Additionally, if you don’t follow the repetition technique and stay consistent during the taming sessions, all the efforts may go down the drain.
Ways to Tame a Budgie Fast
To escape from a Budgie’s timely taming, we are going to share some secrets that can help tame a Budgie faster. If you don’t follow the right steps at the right time, you may fail to tame your little companion. Try not to go very hard and fast on him. Tame the little bird step by step, so that he learns efficiently.
Comfort your Budgie
The first and most important aspect of taming your Budgie is to win his trust. Once he starts trusting you, their taming sessions are bound to go fruitful. So, you must manage to have a bond with your bird first and then move to the art of taming.
Budgies need comfort around them. And it is your duty to offer that comfort to him from the very first day. Let him settle in his new cage. He may be investigating his new toys and new family. You just need to sit and let him adapt at his pace and comfort.
From the second day onwards, try building more trust between you and your Budgie. Keep his cage a bit close to you, and spend your time doing normal regular activities around him. Let him notice you.
Interact without touching
Now when your Budgie knows you and you have learned about his behavior too, it’s time to have a gentle interaction. Just sit quietly close to his cage and talk to him without touching. Be patient and don’t increase his anxiety. Don’t look at him directly. Be gentle in your voice while interacting with your new family member.
Offer Him Some Bits of Spray Millet
To quickly tame a budgie you need a spray millet. After having made the bird a little comfortable, it is time to open the door and place your hand inside his cage. Open the cage gently so as not to rouse your Budgie. Do not touch him directly. Maintain a physical space. Offer him a treat. Budgerigars love treats. Put some bits of millet on your palm and offer him to eat that. Millet treat is effective training for a Budgie.
The response you receive from your budgie will tell you how much comfort he has gained with you being around. Let him eat as much as he wants. Offer him some freshwater then.
Hand tame to step-up
When you have finally formed a bond with your Budgie, you can start the taming sessions. After opening the cage if your budgie comes out by himself, it’s half the battle won. But if this doesn’t happen, pick a piece of millet and place it on your finger. Seeing the millet, he will step on your finger to have his favorite treat. To Tame a Budgie is about getting a bond.
What if Budgie doesn’t come out of the cage?
Many budgie parents come across a point where, even after repeated efforts, they are unable to even nail the first step of taking the bird out of the cage. In this case, there is a way out but it must only be used as a last resort.
Firstly, darken the room a little and pick a light soft towel or wear gloves. Be gentle towards your Budgie and take him out of the cage. He may flutter around. Scoop him up and hold him with extremely gentle hands.
You have to be careful with the hand tame. He may nip your finger but do not jerk your hand away when he bites. Yes, they hurt but not unbearable. Twitching away may treat him how to escape from you.
Speak to him in a soft manner to tame a budgie
Move your index finger close to him and encourage him to step on your finger. Speak to him in a soft manner. Praise him as he’s a very nice bird. He may not understand what you have said, but he’ll know that you are happy with him. Once he’s comfortable, place your index finger on his chest and push him up gently. Do not force him, make a light pressure. Be patient and let him learn what you want him to do.
Say, ‘Step-up’ as a verbal hint when you do this. Remember to use the same verbal hint each time you want him to step up. If your Budgie is still shy, you can again take the help of a millet spray. Make your hand still when he’s onto your finger. Let him be comfortable with your hand. Walk some steps into your home keeping him on your finger.
Repeat this taming session 2 or 3 times a day. The ultimate goal is to make him understand when you want him to step up. That is a simple and quick way to tame a budgie
Conclusion
All your efforts in taming your Budgie always pay off if you are dedicated to your bird. Your Budgie needs a comfortable and friendly environment and bonding with him is the first step to make him feel at home.
